Program Introduction
This program focuses on the roles and responsibilities of support workers (caregivers); as well as some of the legislative, practical, legal, and ethical issues facing carers while providing general care to clients.
The program will provide foundation skills and knowledge for future caregiver/ support worker training and work under supervision.
Students learn about support work/caregiving as a career path; key issues such as client demographics/needs are covered. As well, the program will provide general knowledge of how carers help clients manage the impact of age, disability, disease, and injury; and address emergency situations so as to help those in need. An introduction to the work site and foundation communication skills are covered.
Learninng Outcomes
At the end of this program, graduates will have gained foundation knowledge and related understanding for support/caregiver work for future study/ work under direct supervision in the field.
At the end of the program graduates will be able to;
Outline the fundamental roles and responsibilities of the support/ care worker
Describe the history and functions of the Canadian healthcare system
Outline the professional workplace setting and client needs
Describe various legal/ ethical issues that support workers/ caregivers must consider when working with clients and organizations.
Describe how to identify and work with a range of care-related conditions
Engage in effective communication with clients; coworkers and allied professionals.
Identify the correct actions to take in the event of an emergency
This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. As such, PTIB did not review this program.
High school graduation or equivalent (ie GED)
19 years of age
Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through prior education in English at grade 10 level or higher or through an English language assessment (IELTS 5 or equivalent).
Note: Students may be required to provide additional information/ documentation. For example, a copy of government-issued identification; acknowledgment of student handbook/policies; international students may require evidence of a valid study permit.
