Program Description

This program is designed for non native English speakers  who  are interested in health care professions or are currently working in the area.  

It’s  learning objective is to support students’ gaining and improving proficiency related to language use and communication in health care.

The intent of the program is to improve the student’s English related   knowledge of body structure, medical terminology and communication skills in health care.

The program covers a number of key areas:

  • Organization of the Human Body
  • Terminology
  • Word Structure
  • Pronunciation / spelling
  • Communication in health care

anatomy/physiology and medical
terminology.

It also features word building skills using
word parts,prefixes,suffixes,combining
vowels,combining forms and relates
these terms to the anatomy and
physiology of the body systems.

This course will lead the learner into a
deeper knowledge level of the body
systems and related terminology.

The Course allows the student to
become acquainted with the Canadian
approaches to health care:

· Engage in related language skills /
   communication used in the context
   health care.Non-verbal -verbal –
   and workplace communication
● Gain a foundation for use of
   language in situations general to

Learninng Outcomes

On graduation. learners will be able to:

 

 Course one

  • Identify the anatomy and physiology of the body systems and related organs.

  • Demonstrate their ability to build medical terms using the fundamental component parts.   

  • Demonstrate correct pronunciation and spelling of terms.

  • Build a medical vocabulary reference.

  • Outline singular and plural forms of terms.

  • Identify abbreviations.

  • Explain terms related to the human body in health and disease.

Course two

  • Label the anatomy of selected body systems.

  • Define the organs and structures related to selected body systems.

  • Outline different meanings and pronunciations of medical terms for selected

Course three

  • Demonstrate effective use of English for communication purposes in health care settings

  • Explain clearly, in English, key aspects of Canadian heath care organizational culture.

This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. As such, PTIB did not review this program

  • A Canadian Secondary School Diploma; GED certificate; or evidence of successful completion of at least 12 years of secondary study. 

  • Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through prior education in English at grade 10 level or higher or through an English language assessment (IELTS 5.5 certificate or evidence of a standard test score equivalency).

Note: Students may be required to provide additional information/ documentation. For example, a copy of government-issued identification; and acknowledgement of the student handbook/ polices.
